Extended Dynamic Range Imaging
The range of light in a scene is usually far greater than can be displayed on a monitor and highlights can disappear and shadows block up. By photographing the same scene several times and combining a range of different exposures which are then tonemapped, greater detail can be captured.

Imaging and Lighting for 3D modellers
Photographic background plates for 3D models can be used in conjunction with High Dynamic Range Images to create a photorealistic impression. HDRI images are captured in the same way as Extended Dynamic Range but are not tonemapped and retain the full luminance range of the natural light in the scene. Used as a lightdome in 3D modelling they add realism and accuracy to the lighting.
